Besakih Temple is the most important and largest temple in Bali. Often called the Mother Temple, it sits high on the slopes of Mount Agung and serves as a spiritual center for Balinese Hindus. Surrounded by lush hills and clouds, the temple complex offers a peaceful and powerful atmosphere unlike anywhere else on the island.
Visiting Besakih is not just a sightseeing trip. It is a cultural and spiritual experience that gives travelers a deeper understanding of Bali’s soul.
Besakih Temple is located in eastern Bali, in the Karangasem Regency. It sits at about 1,000 meters above sea level on the southwest side of Mount Agung, the island’s highest volcano.
From Ngurah Rai International Airport, the drive takes about 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic. From Ubud, it is about a 2-hour drive through scenic countryside. A private car with driver is the most convenient and comfortable way to get there.
Besakih Temple dates back more than 1,000 years and is considered the holiest temple in Bali. It is the central point of all temples on the island and symbolizes the balance between humans, nature, and the gods.
The temple complex includes over 80 individual temples. The most important one is Pura Penataran Agung, dedicated to Shiva. Other temples honor Brahma, Vishnu, ancestors, and nature spirits.
The design follows the Balinese concept of Tri Hita Karana, the harmony between humans, nature, and the divine. Its placement on the mountain adds to its spiritual power and importance.
Visitors will walk uphill through several levels of temples, each with traditional Balinese gates, stone steps, and mountain views. Locals come here to pray during ceremonies wearing full temple attire. The energy is calm and sacred.
Guided tours are available at the entrance, and wearing a sarong and sash is mandatory. These can be rented or brought with you.
The entrance ticket as of now is around IDR 90,000 for international tourists, which includes a local guide. Opening hours are typically from 8 AM to 6 PM.
Photography is allowed in most areas, but you must be respectful and avoid entering spaces where ceremonies are taking place unless invited.
